Located in the southernmost part of Switzerland, the Ticino region is a hidden gem renowned for its stunning landscapes, picturesque towns, and vibrant culture. Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Ticino offers a unique blend of Italian and Swiss influences, creating an enchanting atmosphere that captivates visitors.

Blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate, Ticino boasts lush green valleys, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear lakes that beckon outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The region’s diverse topography, ranging from snow-capped peaks to serene lakeshores, provides a playground for various outdoor activities, including canyoning.

That is what brought me to Ticino and one canyon in particular – Lower Lodrino

This canyon is one of the top rated canyon according to reviews by canyoneers, and it was fabulous.

Approach

The approach was a bit tricky for me since I didn’t have a detailed map like the one I provided above. The challenge is finding the trail to hike up to the canyon from the city. You have to walk through people’s yards to access it, but the is a public right of way to access it so just go for it. Follow the route on the map I provided and you should be fine. The ascent is about 520m (1700ft), but short. I found it to be a great little hike and actually encounter an ibex on the trail which was exciting!

Descent

Prepare yourself for potentially strong water flow when exploring this canyon. The lower section of the canyon is classified as 4C3 II R (v5a6 IV), indicating its technical difficulty level. The largest rappel in this section measures approximately 59.5 meters or 195 feet in height.

The canyon itself presents a breathtaking sight, adorned with beautifully sculpted granite formations. As you navigate through its enchanting depths, you’ll encounter numerous aquatic features, including exhilarating slides and opportunities for jumps into refreshing pools.

One of the most remarkable highlights of the canyon experience is the penultimate rappel. You’ll find yourself descending through an arch, adding an extra touch of awe to your adventure. This rappel leads you into a deep blue pool, creating a striking contrast against the surrounding natural landscape.

Overall, this canyon offers a combination of technical challenges, natural beauty, and thrilling water features. It promises a memorable journey as you immerse yourself in its stunning surroundings and engage in exciting rappels and encounters with aquatic elements.

Exit

After completing the final rappel, you’ll find yourself in close proximity to the road. Simply follow the road for a short distance, and you will soon arrive back at your car, concluding your adventure.

If you find yourself in Ticino you might want to consider looking into canyoning as it is one of the most popular canyoning destinations. In addition to this canyon consider the breathtaking Verzasca Valley. The Verzasca River cuts through the valley, creating a dramatic landscape with emerald-green waters and towering granite cliffs. The river’s crystal-clear waters make it a paradise for canyoning, as participants venture into its ravines, marvel at its natural beauty, and conquer thrilling obstacles along the way. Make sure to check out the bridge at Lavertezzo.

In addition to the Verzasca Valley, Ticino is home to other renowned canyoning spots, including the Maggia Valley, Bavona Valley, and the Monte Carasso area. Each location offers its own unique canyoning experiences, ranging from gentle descents suitable for beginners to adrenaline-pumping routes for seasoned adventurers.

As canyoning involves traversing challenging environments, it is essential to prioritize safety and take necessary precautions. Engaging in canyoning activities with experienced and certified guides is highly recommended, as they possess local knowledge, expertise, and safety equipment to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Exploring Ticino’s canyons provides not only an exhilarating adventure but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the region’s awe-inspiring natural beauty. The combination of adrenaline-inducing activities and the picturesque surroundings of Ticino makes canyoning in this area a truly unforgettable experience. Check out my video above of our descent of this canyon (we also added the section above Lower Lodrino since we had extra time). Whether you are a thrill-seeker looking for an adrenaline rush or simply seeking to connect with nature’s wonders, Ticino offers an abundance of canyoning opportunities that will leave you with lasting memories of this remarkable Swiss region.
