If you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable experience in New Zealand, look no further than the Glow Worm Caves and Black Water Rafting. This was maybe one of my favorite if not most unique experiences we had in New Zealand.

Located in the Waitomo region of the North Island, the Glow Worm Caves are home to thousands (if not millions) of tiny glow worms that light up the underground caverns like stars in the night sky. Add on top of that, you get to explore the caves by black water rafting!

Black water rafting is a thrilling activity that involves riding an inner tube through underground rivers and waterfalls. The darkness of the caves is illuminated by the glow worms, creating a surreal and otherworldly experience.

The adventure starts with a brief safety briefing and gear fitting (wetsuit, boots, helmet, and headlamp are all included), followed by a short walk through the forest to the cave entrance. Once inside the cave, you’ll float through the water as you admire the glow worms above you. You’ll also navigate rapids and cascading waterfalls, adding to the excitement of the journey.

One of the highlights of the experience is the “glow worm cathedral,” where thousands of glow worms light up the cavern walls like a starry night sky. It’s a truly breathtaking sight and one that you won’t soon forget.

The Black Labyrinth tour is perfect for those who are new to black water rafting, while the Black Abyss tour is a more advanced and adrenaline-pumping adventure that involves rappelling down waterfalls and jumping into underground pools. Both tours are led by experienced and knowledgeable guides who will ensure your safety and provide interesting information about the caves and glow worms.

So if you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind adventure in New Zealand, don’t miss the Glow Worm Caves and Black Water Rafting. It’s a bucket list experience that you’ll never forget!

At first I might sound boring, maybe I am? I’m a middle-aged manager at a bank with a passion for travel and finance. I’m a walking contradiction – half nerd/half adventurer. I’m like a human ATM, dispensing financial advice and travel tips in equal measure. At times it is a mystery how I’m able to fit so much in between family, work, and play. Regardless, if you need a lesson on frugality or a recommendation for an adventure of a lifetime, I’m your guy.
