Visiting the Romantic Road in Germany is a captivating journey that takes you through a picturesque route filled with historic towns, medieval castles, charming landscapes, and a rich cultural heritage.

The Romantic Road stretches approximately 400 kilometers from Würzburg in northern Bavaria to Füssen in the foothills of the Alps. This scenic route offers a perfect blend of stunning natural beauty and architectural marvels, making it a popular tourist destination. Click on the markers on the map below to see locations and the route along the road.

Your adventure begins in Würzburg, where you can explore the iconic Würzburg Residence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its baroque architecture and stunning gardens. Take a leisurely stroll through the charming old town, visit the impressive Marienberg Fortress, and enjoy a glass of local Franconian wine in one of the traditional wine cellars.

As you continue along the Romantic Road, you’ll come across the enchanting town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This well-preserved medieval town is a true gem, with its cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and fortified city walls. Exploring the town feels like stepping back in time, and you can visit attractions such as the impressive Rothenburg Town Hall, the medieval Crime Museum, and the stunning St. Jacob’s Church.

Further along the route, you’ll encounter charming towns like Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen, and Augsburg, each with its own unique character and architectural wonders. Dinkelsbühl boasts a well-preserved medieval old town, Nördlingen is known for its circular city walls and Gothic churches, while Augsburg offers a rich history, including the Fuggerei, the world’s oldest social housing complex.

One of the highlights of the Romantic Road is the fairytale-like Neuschwanstein Castle near Füssen. This iconic castle, perched on a hilltop overlooking the Bavarian countryside, was the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Take a guided tour inside to marvel at its opulent interiors and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

Along the Romantic Road, you’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy the region’s natural beauty. The route meanders through rolling hills, vineyards, and charming villages, offering scenic vistas at every turn. Take your time to stop at viewpoints, visit local gardens, or embark on short hikes to immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes.

In addition to its visual allure, the Romantic Road is renowned for its gastronomic delights. Indulge in traditional Bavarian cuisine, savoring hearty dishes like sausages, pretzels, schnitzel, and regional specialties such as Schäufele and Spätzle. Accompany your meal with a glass of local beer or wine, and don’t miss the opportunity to taste the famous Black Forest cake.

Here is a list of some of the notable stops (also mentioned above, but in a more concise format) you should consider visiting along the Romantic Road in Germany:

  • Würzburg: Explore the Würzburg Residence, Marienberg Fortress, and the charming old town.
  • Rothenburg ob der Tauber: Wander through the well-preserved medieval streets, visit the Plönlein square, and explore the Rothenburg Town Hall and St. Jacob’s Church. This is a must visit in my opinion and often said to be the best preserved midieval town. Make sure you do the night watch tour for a fun and interesting night walk through the town.
    • We’ve stayed at the Klosterstüble hotel both times we’ve gone to Rothenburg. This is a charming hotel located inside the city walls. The staff is friendly and the rooms are unique.
