The weather in Tongariro National Park can be unpredictable and changeable, so it’s important to be prepared for all types of conditions. In the summer, temperatures can range from 10-25°C (50-77°F), while in the winter, they can drop below freezing. When we visited it rained all day and the mountains were covered in thick fog so unfortunately we didn’t get to see any great views. We had planned to hike the Taranaki Falls trail but were unable to due to the weather. We did get to visit Gollum’s Pool from the Lord of the Rings, which is located just inside the park and is an easy walk to see the waterfall.
The Park is known for its stunning hiking trails, including the world-famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This 19.4 km (12 mile) trail takes you through volcanic landscapes, past emerald lakes, and offers incredible views of Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro. We stayed at Discovery Lodge Tongariro which has cabins and full hookups for campervans. It was nice to have a place to shower and do laundry. There are a range of accommodation options available in and around Tongariro National Park, including campsites, holiday parks, lodges, and hotels. It’s a good idea to book in advance, especially during peak season (December – February).
