Before visiting Greece, I’d always heard so much talk about all the islands but I don’t recall anyone telling me about the amazing Peloponnesian Peninsula! I hope to change that for you with this write up on some of the Treasures of the Peloponnesian Peninsula. We’ll explore the must-visit destinations of Nafplion, Monemvasia, Kalamata, and Olympia.
Nafplion: The Romantic Town
Nafplion, situated in the Argolis region of the Peloponnesian Peninsula, is a captivating town with a rich history and a charm that will leave you enchanted. This former capital of Greece, with its stunning Venetian architecture, picturesque alleys, and romantic atmosphere, is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the region.
History and Architecture
Nafplion’s history dates back to the ancient times, but it was during the Venetian occupation (1389-1540) that the town’s architecture and character were shaped. The Venetians built impressive fortifications, including the Palamidi Fortress and the Acronauplia, which still stand today. The town’s architecture is a beautiful blend of Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek styles, with colorful buildings, ornate balconies, and narrow streets.
Romantic Atmosphere
Nafplion’s romantic atmosphere is palpable, making it an ideal destination for couples and honeymooners. Take a stroll through the picturesque alleys, admire the beautiful architecture, and enjoy the town’s vibrant nightlife. Monemvasia is a breathtakingly beautiful town situated on a small island connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. This medieval town is filled with narrow streets, charming shops, and historic landmarks, making it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the Peloponnesian Peninsula. I love being in a walled city and having a chance to stay overnight in one was a cherry on top!
History and Architecture – Monemvasia was founded in 583 AD by the Byzantines, who sought refuge from the barbarian invasions. The town’s strategic location made it an important stronghold, and it was later occupied by the Venetians, the Ottomans, and the Greeks. This rich history is reflected in the town’s architecture, which is a blend of Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman styles.
Lower Town – The Lower Town is the inhabited part of Monemvasia, where you’ll find charming hotels, bars, restaurants, and shops. The narrow streets are filled with colorful buildings, ornate balconies, and historic landmarks like the Church of Elkomenos Christos and the Church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa.
Upper Town – The Upper Town is the uninhabited part of Monemvasia, home to many charming ruins and offering spectacular panoramic views of the entire medieval settlement. Take a hike through the Upper Town to explore the remnants of the old town and enjoy the stunning views.

As you walk through the ruins, you can almost hear the echoes of ancient athletes competing in the stadium, and the whispers of philosophers debating in the temples. The sheer scale and majesty of the ancient structures will leave you in awe, and the peaceful surroundings will transport you back in time. It was one of my favorite spots to visit, especially at this time of year with the beautiful trees blooming, their vibrant colors and sweet scents adding to the magic of the place. The atmosphere is truly unforgettable, and you can’t help but feel a sense of wonder and connection to the ancient civilization that once thrived here.

Accommodations – While there were several hotel options in Olympia I found the prices to be on the expensive side. We ended up booking our stay outside of Olympia and closer to the ocean. There were several options and we didn’t mind the 30 minute drive to get to Olympia.
