Floating the Pacuare River with Pacuare Outdoor Center (POC) was an exceptional adventure that allowed us to be immersed in the beauty of Costa Rica’s natural landscapes while experiencing thrilling rapids and serene stretches of the river. Here’s what you can expect from a Pacuare River expedition with POC.

Pacuare River

POC is a reputable and well-established rafting company that specializes in eco-friendly and sustainable adventures on the Pacuare River. They are known for their commitment to conservation, safety, and providing high-quality experiences for visitors. Our main guide was Marlon – he told us to think of Marlon Brando to remember his name, and after that we never forgot.

The journey typically begins with a scenic drive from San Jose or other nearby locations to a meet up point, where you’ll receive a comprehensive safety briefing from experienced and certified guides. POC takes safety seriously, ensuring that all guides are skilled in whitewater rafting techniques and first aid. We felt very comfortable with our guides and they were very fun to be around making jokes and ensuring we never stopped laughing.

Once you’re equipped with the necessary safety gear, including helmets and life jackets, it’s time to hit the water. The Pacuare River is renowned for its rapids, ranging from Class II to Class IV, offering an exhilarating ride for both beginners and experienced rafters. As you navigate the rapids, you’ll be surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, cascading waterfalls, and stunning canyons, creating a truly immersive experience.

POC offers various options for rafting trips on the Pacuare River, ranging from one-day excursions to multi-day expeditions. If you choose a multi-day trip, you’ll have the opportunity to spend nights in eco-lodges or luxury tent camps nestled in the rainforest. These accommodations provide a comfortable and immersive experience, allowing you to disconnect from the outside world and truly appreciate the beauty of your surroundings.

Zipline above Pacuare River

We did a three day trip which meant in addition to rafting, other activities were added to the itinerary, such as hiking through the rainforest, swimming in natural pools, and even ziplining. I’ve done ziplining in multiple locations, but being able to do it above the Pacuare River was probably my favorite! Feeling the wind whip against your face as you fly above the treetops, marveling at the breathtaking scenery below is unforgettable. The vibrant green canopy stretches endlessly, revealing a world for monkeys and colorful birds darting through the sky. POC’s expert guides ensured our safety and shared their passion for conservation, making this ziplining adventure a memorable journey.

Lunch at the Outdoor Center Pacuare River

I think I also need to add a section about the food prepared by the guides. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I assumed since we were on a river trip that the food might leave something to be desired. I was happy to have my expectations exceeded. With a focus on local and fresh ingredients, the meals offered were great. From hearty breakfasts to energize you for the day’s activities to mouthwatering lunches enjoyed amidst the natural beauty. Savory traditional dishes infused with tropical flair, vibrant salads bursting with colors, and delectable desserts that satisfy the sweetest cravings are just a glimpse of the culinary experience that awaits. POC’s commitment to sustainability extends to their food practices, emphasizing eco-friendly packaging and minimizing waste.

Throughout the journey, POC guides provide insightful information about the river’s ecosystem, pointing out unique plant and animal species that call this area home. You may catch glimpses of monkeys swinging through the trees, colorful birds soaring overhead, or even spot the elusive jaguar tracks along the riverbanks. We weren’t so lucky but always kept our eyes peeled just incase.

Floating the Pacuare River with POC is not only an adventure of a lifetime but also a chance to support a company that values environmental conservation and community engagement. By choosing this experience, you contribute to the protection of the Pacuare River and its surrounding ecosystems, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy its beauty.

Remember to bring appropriate clothing, including quick-drying and sun-protective attire, as well as water shoes or sturdy sandals for the river. Don’t forget to pack a waterproof camera or GoPro to capture the breathtaking moments along the way. Check out my GoPro at the end of this post!

Overall, floating the Pacuare River promises an unforgettable experience filled with adrenaline, natural wonders, and a deep appreciation for Costa Rica’s remarkable landscapes.

Get to Know Me

At first I might sound boring, maybe I am? I’m a middle-aged manager at a bank with a passion for travel and finance. I’m a walking contradiction – half nerd/half adventurer. I’m like a human ATM, dispensing financial advice and travel tips in equal measure. At times it is a mystery how I’m able to fit so much in between family, work, and play. Regardless, if you need a lesson on frugality or a recommendation for an adventure of a lifetime, I’m your guy.
