Costa Rica is one of those countries that everyone talks about visiting, and for good reason. In fact, this was our second time to the country in just a couple years. This time we were focusing on a new area for us, the eastern coast. Costa Rica’s east side is a treasure trove of natural wonders and vibrant biodiversity. From the rushing rapids of the Pacuare River to the lush rainforests and stunning beaches of Parque Nacional Cahuita, the region offers a plethora of exciting experiences. In addition, the Jaguar Rescue Center and Refugio Nacional Gandoca-Manzanillo showcase the country’s commitment to wildlife conservation. Here are the highlights of our trip to the east side.
We started with the Pacuare River. It is renowned as one of the world’s best whitewater rafting destinations, and is a must-visit for adventure seekers. Located in the Limón province, this pristine river meanders through dense rainforest and offers an adrenaline-pumping journey. Experienced guides will lead you through thrilling rapids while also providing insights into the local flora and fauna. We used the Pacuare Outdoor Center as our guide company (Link to our post on that). You can choose from day trips or multi-day rafting expeditions, which include overnight stays in eco-lodges or luxury tent camps nestled within the lush surroundings.
Heading further east is Parque Nacional Cahuita. Situated along the Caribbean coast, is a true paradise for nature enthusiasts. The park is renowned for its stunning white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs. Snorkeling or scuba diving here allows you to explore the colorful marine life, including tropical fish, stingrays, and even sea turtles. Make sure you figure out the regulations if you want to do that. On land, the park boasts diverse ecosystems, including dense rainforests inhabited by monkeys, sloths, and various bird species. There are well-maintained trails for hiking, providing an opportunity to immerse yourself in the park’s natural beauty.
As you drive south along the coast there is a cool animal rescue center. The Jaguar Rescue Center, located near Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, is a rescue and rehabilitation center for injured and orphaned wildlife. This remarkable sanctuary is dedicated to the conservation and protection of Costa Rica’s unique animal species. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the center’s efforts, observe different animals in their natural habitats, and even interact with some of the resident creatures. From monkeys and sloths to jaguars and toucans, the Jaguar Rescue Center provides an up-close encounter with Costa Rica’s fascinating wildlife. Make sure you get tickets in advance as they sell out when they reach their capacity.
My favorite hiking destination on this trip was Refugio Nacional Gandoca-Manzanillo. Located in the southeastern corner of Costa Rica, it offers a pristine and lesser-explored natural environment. This protected area encompasses stunning beaches, mangroves, wetlands, and tropical rainforests. Hiking through the park’s trails allows you to discover a diverse array of plant and animal species, including howler monkeys, poison dart frogs, and exotic birdlife. Gandoca-Manzanillo is an ideal destination for birdwatching enthusiasts, with various species, such as the toucan, trogon, and macaw, calling the park home.
When visiting the east side of Costa Rica, it’s essential to embrace sustainable and responsible travel practices. Respect the natural environment by following guidelines and leaving no trace. Consider supporting local businesses and eco-friendly accommodations that prioritize conservation efforts. Additionally, ensure you have appropriate gear for the activities you’ll be doing.
I’m hoping to get back to Costa Rica again, if you’ve been there let me know in the comments what your favorite part of the country is!
