Before I get into the description of Hobbiton Movie Set, I need to explain how I ended up visiting Hobbiton. Even though I love a good fantasy novel, I have to admit I’m not a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings – Diehard fans please forgive me, but I just never really got into it. I knew that much of The Lord of the Rings filming happened on the North Island and I did initially want to visit the Hobbiton Movie Set. However, that thought quickly changed when I saw the price of the tickets! The normal prices were already high ($199 NZD/person for the evening banquet tour), but the date we were going to visit was for their special 10 year anniversary event. The price was $250 NZD/person! There was no way I as a semi-fan was going to pay that amount to visit the set. My wife on the other hand had a different idea, she said this was a once in a lifetime opportunity and we need to just bite the bullet and go to this event. Once again my wife’s instincts were sharper than mine. I completely enjoyed this event and while it was pricey I am super happy we got to experience it which included:

  • A fully guided tour of Hobbiton Movie Set
  • Hobbit South farthing beverages on tap throughout the evening
  • Marketplace in the Bywater Beer Garden with interactive games
  • Dinner and dessert served from the marketplace and Green Dragon Inn
  • An evening outdoor screening of the theatrical cut of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on the Party Field
  • Unlimited popcorn, ice cream, and lollies (treats) during the movie

The highlight for me was being able to watch “The Hobbit” on the party field and being able to look around at the set while watching the actual movie. It was such a cool experience that I can describe what it felt like other than pretty freaking awesome! I can only imagine how the Diehard fans were feeling as I could hear audible gasps and cheers from those around us.

Now that I shared my amazing experience let me describe Hobbiton if you are unfamiliar. Hobbiton is a real-life movie set located in Matamata, New Zealand, that was created for the filming of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” film trilogies. The set was built on a private farm and features over 40 hobbit holes, a mill, a double-arch bridge, and the famous Green Dragon Inn.

Visitors can take various types of guided tours of Hobbiton Movie Set to see the iconic locations and learn about the making of the films. The tours last approximately two hours and are led by knowledgeable guides who share behind-the-scenes information about the making of the movies. Guests can explore the hobbit holes (you only get to go into one as most are just facades), walk around the picturesque gardens, and visit the Green Dragon Inn to enjoy a complimentary beverage. If you buy the more expensive evening banquet tour you get a full meal at the Green Dragon. I would highly recommend this as the food was great and the atmosphere even better.

It is important to note that visiting Hobbiton Movie Set is a popular tourist activity, so it is recommended to book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. Visitors should also be prepared for the New Zealand climate, which can be unpredictable, so it is advisable to dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes.

Visiting Hobbiton Movie Set is a unique and memorable experience for fans of The Lord of the Rings and “The Hobbit” movies, as well as anyone who appreciates beautiful scenery and the art of film-making! I would definitely recommend it even if you aren’t a huge Lord of the Rings fan.

Do you think I made a mistake, would you have booked this activity?
