Traveling to Peru is a passport to a world of wonders. From the vibrant streets of Lima to the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu, this South American gem captivates the imagination with its rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant culture. Spend some time to wander through ancient Inca sites, marvel at the soaring peaks of the Andes, and sample mouthwatering Peruvian cuisine. Whether you’re exploring the bustling markets of Cusco or trekking through the spectacular Rainbow Mountain, Peru’s enchanting tapestry of experiences promises an unforgettable adventure that will leave you yearning for more. As with all our trips I’ll start with an overview post of the entire trip, and then give detailed posts on specific activities.

We started our trip in Lima, the vibrant capital of Peru. I was told by many people not to spend too much time in Lima, but I’m glad I didn’t listen and we spent a few days in the capital. The Water Fountains Park (Magic Water Circuit) is a true testament to the city’s charm and was a highlight of the city for us. Nestled within the expansive Parque de la Reserva, this enchanting attraction offers a whimsical oasis amidst the urban landscape. As night falls, the fountains come alive with a symphony of colors, lights, and dancing water jets that create a mesmerizing spectacle. If you’ve seen the fountains at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and been impressed, be prepared for another level of water shows! Check out my post for more details about the Magic Water Circuit.

A surprise for me was the food of Lima. Lima is a haven for food lovers with its rich culinary heritage and diverse flavors. The city offers a mouthwatering array of culinary pleasures that showcase the fusion of traditional Peruvian cuisine with international influences. From world-renowned ceviche, featuring fresh seafood marinated in tangy lime juice and bursting with vibrant flavors, to the hearty and flavorful anticuchos (grilled skewered meats), Lima’s street food scene is a feast for the senses. The city also boasts numerous award-winning restaurants that have put Peru on the global gastronomic map. I’ve been told two of the top ten restaurants in the world are in Lima. I’m not sure how to verify that, but after so many excellent meals in Lima, I’d believe it! Lima’s culinary offerings promise to take your taste buds on an unforgettable adventure. With its culinary creativity and dedication to its own flavors, Lima truly stands out as a culinary capital that delights foodies and anyone with taste buds.

We spent the second half of our trip visiting Cusco, where it is like stepping into a living history book. Nestled in the heart of the Peruvian Andes, this enchanting city was once the capital of the mighty Inca Empire and continues to captivate travelers from around the globe. With its cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and awe-inspiring views of the surrounding mountains, Cusco exudes a magical atmosphere. As you wander through the vibrant San Blas neighborhood or explore the bustling Plaza de Armas, you’ll encounter a fascinating blend of Inca and Spanish influences. The crown jewel of Cusco, of course, is the legendary Machu Picchu. Cusco is the starting point for many peoples breathtaking train journey to Machu Picchu. For those that have more time and desire more adventure can attempt the renowned Inca Trail to reach this ancient citadel perched high in the clouds. The sense of wonder and awe that washes over you as you witness the magnificent ruins is truly indescribable. But Cusco is more than just Machu Picchu. It’s a destination where history comes alive, where you can delve into local markets filled with colorful textiles, sample delicious Peruvian cuisine, and immerse yourself in the traditions of the Andean culture. Cusco is a place that will leave an indelible mark on your soul, inviting you to embrace the past while living in the present.

Overall, I can’t recommend Peru enough. For a budget traveler, you get quite the bang for you buck! To add on top of amazing activities and food, the people are a delight. Where other countries at times you might feel resented for being a tourist, but in Peru you are welcomed with smiles and delightful people excited to share their culture. I can’t wait for an opportunity to get back to Peru in the future.
