If you’re looking for a getaway that combines outdoor adventure, stargazing, good food, and a dose of nostalgia, Bend, Oregon, should be at the top of your list. On a recent trip for our 20th anniversary, we had the pleasure of experiencing some of the best this beautiful region has to offer. From hiking through ancient lava caves to floating along the peaceful South Santiam River, here’s a rundown of the highlights.

Lava River Cave: A Journey Beneath the Earth

We kicked off our trip with a visit to the Lava River Cave, a natural wonder carved out by volcanic forces nearly 80,000 years ago. This mile-long lava tube, located in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, offers a unique underground experience that’s perfect for adventurers.

Planning your visit to the Lava River Cave is essential, as it has become a popular attraction in the Bend area. The cave is open seasonally from mid-May through September, and you’ll need to make reservations in advance to secure your spot. Tickets can be purchased online through the U.S. Forest Service website or at Recreation.gov. Make sure to book early, especially if you’re visiting during peak summer months, as time slots fill up quickly.

Upon arrival, you’ll need to check in at the kiosk to confirm your reservation and pick up your flashlight if you don’t have one—flashlights are essential, as the cave is pitch black once you enter. The entrance to the cave is quite steep, but the hike inside is relatively easy, with the cool 40-degree temperature offering a natural escape from the summer heat.

The rock formations inside the cave are breathtaking, ranging from jagged lava spikes to smooth, otherworldly basalt walls that have been sculpted by centuries of volcanic activity. The experience of walking through this ancient underground tunnel, with nothing but the beam of your flashlight illuminating the path, is truly one-of-a-kind.

Oregon Observatory: Stargazing Like Never Before

After exploring beneath the earth, we turned our gaze skyward at the Oregon Observatory, one of the best stargazing spots in the country. If you’ve ever wanted to see the rings of Saturn or the craters of the moon up close, this is the place to do it. The observatory boasts an impressive array of telescopes, and the staff are incredibly knowledgeable, guiding you through the wonders of the night sky. On a clear evening, the view of stars and galaxies was breathtaking, and the dark skies of Central Oregon made it an astronomer’s dream.

Bend Whitewater Park: Thrills on the Water

For a bit more excitement, we headed over to Bend Whitewater Park, where the Deschutes River offers a variety of activities for water lovers. Whether you’re into surfing, kayaking, or tubing, this park has it all. We opted to tube down the calmer channels, but if you’re up for a challenge, the whitewater section provides plenty of adrenaline-pumping action. Watching skilled kayakers ride the artificial waves was a treat in itself. This park is a must-visit for anyone seeking a fun mix of thrill and chill in the heart of Bend.

Bangers & Brews – Westside: Sausages and Craft Beer Heaven

After a day of adventure, there’s nothing better than a great meal, and Bangers & Brews – Westside delivered in spades. This casual eatery specializes in gourmet sausages, from classic bratwursts to more adventurous options like wild boar or elk. Paired with one of their local craft brews, it was the perfect way to unwind. The outdoor seating and laid-back vibe made it feel like the quintessential Bend dining experience. If you’re a fan of unique flavors and good beer, make sure to put this spot on your list.

A Blast from the Past: The Last Blockbuster

No trip to Bend would be complete without a stop at the last Blockbuster on Earth. Yes, it’s still standing, and walking through its aisles was like stepping back in time. For anyone who grew up in the ‘90s, visiting this relic of the past was a nostalgic experience. From the smell of the DVDs to the familiar blue-and-yellow signs, it was a true blast from the past. They’ve even got some fun merchandise, so you can take home a piece of movie rental history. It’s a quirky, must-see spot for any visitor to Bend.

Floating the South Santiam River: The Perfect End to the Trip

To top off the trip, we drove out to the South Santiam River for a leisurely float. There’s no better way to unwind after days of exploring than drifting down a peaceful river surrounded by lush greenery and mountain views. Whether you’re in a tube, kayak, or raft, the gentle flow of the river lets you soak in the beauty of Oregon at your own pace. The combination of cool water and warm sun made for a relaxing and serene experience—the perfect way to end our Bend adventure.

Final Thoughts
Bend, Oregon, is truly a gem for outdoor lovers, foodies, and anyone seeking a bit of nostalgia. From exploring lava caves and stargazing at the observatory to tubing the river and visiting the last Blockbuster, the trip was a fantastic mix of adventure and relaxation.
