I got back today from floating the Muddy Creek for my second time. I took all my kids (ages 7 to 15) in 3 boats. It was a great time and a good little adventure. Floating the Muddy Creek in Utah is a great way to experience the beauty of the San Rafael Swell. The creek flows through a variety of landscapes, from open desert to narrow canyons, and offers a variety of rapids, from Class I to Class III, but this is dependent on the flow. The float is typically done as a day trip, and can take between 5-10 hours to float ~ 13 miles.

The best time to float the Muddy Creek is during the spring, when the water levels are high enough to make the float enjoyable, but not so high that the rapids become too dangerous. The float season is typically only a few weeks long, so it is important to check the water levels before you go. The float is only recommended when the water levels are at a minimum of 150 cubic feet per second (CFS). You can check the current flow rate here.

If you are planning a float on the Muddy Creek, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, make sure you have the proper equipment. You will need a boat, paddles, life jackets, and a first-aid kit. For a more enjoyable experience, it is recommended to float the chute of the Muddy Creek in an inflatable or hard-shell kayak when the water flow is at 200 CFS or higher. Kayaks provide better maneuverability and stability in the challenging rapids. However, if you choose to use a canoe, it is possible to navigate the river at flows over 200 CFS. In such cases, it’s important to be prepared to walk certain rapids or have advanced paddling skills. Second, be aware of the weather conditions. The desert can be hot and dry, so make sure you bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Third, be prepared for the remoteness of the area. There is no cell phone service in the Swell, so you will need to be self-sufficient. Even though you need to be self-sufficient and this area is very remote, if you plan to be on the Muddy Creek during float season you can probably plan on seeing many other people during your trip. So worst case scenario you could ask someone else for support if needed.

At this point if you have decided you’d like to attempt this adventure you’ll need to start working out the logistics. The biggest challenge is the car shuttle from Tomsiche (Put-In) to Hidden Splendor (Takeout). You’ll need two vehicles for this or there are a few companies that offer shuttle service (San Rafael Swell Shuttle: (435) 259-8899). These companies typically charge around $100 per vehicle. The shuttle will drop you off at the trailhead at Tomsich Butte and pick you up at the trailhead at Hidden Splendor. This is a great option if you don’t have two vehicles or if you don’t want to drive the dirt roads in the Swell. If you’d like to complete the shuttle yourself you can use google maps and for directions as it will give you good directions to both the put-in and takeout. This should take about 2 hours so it is good to plan plenty of time for the shuttle or arrange to do it the day before. I would recommend a higher clearance vehicle for this section of road even though I have seen some smaller cars make it to this area with some good driving skills.

The highlight of the float is the “chute” of Muddy creek which is renowned for its natural beauty and scenic splendor. It offers a unique and captivating environment that attracts outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Here are some aspects that highlight the beauty of the chute:
