I try not to say particular places are my favorite in the whole world, as that is too broad and I haven’t been to every place in the world, yet. But I will say Squamish is one of my favorite places I’ve visited thus far in my life. I’ve actually made five trips to this adventure capital since each trip has been well worth it. Squamish offers an experience like no other.
A trip to Squamish starts with a scenic drive along the iconic Sea-to-Sky Highway, I think the name speaks for itself. Arriving to the town get immediately sense the relaxed atmosphere. The picturesque surroundings are captivating.
One of the first things you might consider is exploring the Squamish Estuary. Walking along the network of trails, you’ll encounter diverse bird species and marvel at the untouched beauty of the wetlands. The sight of snow-capped peaks reflected in the calm waters remind us why Squamish is known as the “Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada.”
I’d recommend a day spent with The Stawamus Chief, a towering granite monolith that stands as an emblem of Squamish. The Chief offers a range of trails suitable for different fitness levels. As you ascend, the views become increasingly spectacular, with panoramas of the town, Howe Sound, and the surrounding mountains.
Reaching the summit, savor the feeling of accomplishment and soak in the awe-inspiring vistas. The sea of peaks stretching as far as the eye can see evokes a sense of tranquility and perspective. After descending, enjoy a well-deserved meal at one of the local eateries, savoring fresh seafood and locally sourced ingredients.
As stated above Squamish offers a lot of of adventurous activities. Some you may consider include a thrilling zip-lining experiences through the lush coastal rainforest, soaring above the treetops and catching glimpses of wildlife below. Hit the trails mountain biking, weaving through ancient forests, over exhilarating jumps, and along flowing single tracks. Squamish boasts an extensive network of world-class trails, catering to all skill levels. I personally travel to Squamish for some amazing Canyoneering! You might have guessed from the video above. Squamish canyons offer an immersive experience as you navigate through rugged canyons, rappel down cascading waterfalls, and discover hidden gems in the heart of nature’s playground.
If the higher adventure type activities aren’t your thing hiking in Squamish is also an absolute delight for outdoor enthusiasts seeking to connect with nature. With an extensive network of trails catering to all skill levels, the town offers a plethora of breathtaking hiking opportunities. Whether you’re exploring the lush forests of Alice Lake Provincial Park, venturing up the challenging trail to the summit of the Stawamus Chief, or embarking on the renowned Sea-to-Summit trail, every step reveals awe-inspiring vistas of towering peaks, cascading waterfalls, and pristine alpine lakes. As you traverse the diverse terrain, you’ll be captivated by the fragrance of the forest, the melodies of birdsong, and the invigorating sense of serenity that comes from being immersed in Squamish’s natural wonders.
One hiking adventure I had in Squamish included exploring a glacier. If you haven’t had a chance to explore a glacier, I’d highly recommend it as it is an exciting activity! One of the most notable glaciers in Squamish is the Garibaldi Glacier, which is part of Garibaldi Provincial Park. This massive glacier flows down from the towering peaks of Mount Garibaldi and encompasses a vast area of ice and snow. Hiking to the glacier’s edge allows visitors to witness its grandeur up close and marvel at the glacial ice formations and deep blue crevasses that define its surface.
It’s important to note that exploring glaciers can be hazardous, as they are dynamic and ever-changing environments. Proper preparation, knowledge, and equipment are essential for a safe experience. Guided tours and mountaineering expeditions are available for those seeking a more in-depth exploration of the glaciers, providing an opportunity to learn about their formation, ecology, and the impacts of climate change on these fragile ice formations.
Squamish, British Columbia, is a truly a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. With its towering peaks, lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and pristine lakes, Squamish showcases the raw beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Beyond its natural wonders, Squamish embraces a vibrant community, rich indigenous heritage, and a welcoming small-town atmosphere. Whether you seek adrenaline-pumping experiences or serene moments of tranquility, Squamish captivates visitors with its unparalleled beauty and endless opportunities for exploration. I hope you’ll be lucky enough to visit it one day!
